Summary:
A Fourth-Class Apprentice Lineman will observe and learn to perform numerous duties involved in the maintenance and construction of overhead and underground lines in both energized and de-energized states. This position will include improving climbing skills, operating digger equipment, and beginning to learn to operate an aerial device to maintain and install overhead lines and line equipment. The Lineman shall adhere to all safety rules, standards, and procedures promulgated by 
Wake Electric, NEC, NESC, RUS, OSHA, and state and regulatory agencies in the conduct of their work. The Lineman shall gain a working knowledge of Wake Electric’s distribution system and of the electrical line equipment he/she will install and maintain. This position is on a rotating on-call schedule and will be expected to learn advanced Lineman skills through on-the-job training as well as through classroom-type training provided by Wake Electric. Competencies shall be demonstrated through assessment and/or job evaluation prior to progressing to higher levels of Lineman classification.

Principal Duties and/or Requirements

  • Adheres to all safety rules, standards, and procedures promulgated by Wake Electric, NEC, NESC, RUS, OSHA, and state and regulatory agencies in the performance of all work.
  • Properly utilizes safety equipment and PPE.
  • Develops knowledge of hazard recognition with all job assignments.
  • Observes Lineman’s work on the pole and anticipates Lineman’s need for material and tools.
  • Assists Lineman in preparing materials for use at the work site and performs tasks as assigned by crew leader or foreman.
  • Assists Lineman in equipment maintenance duties.
  • Performs manual labor tasks as assigned the by crew foreman, such as cleaning truck, load materials, digging ditches, tamping, cutting brush, and moving materials.
  • Trains for advanced Lineman positions by learning on-the-job skills related to line work.
  • Maintains ability to administer first aid.
  • Maintains own tools and Wake Electric’s tools and equipment in good working order, such as pliers, crescent wrenches, channel locks, wire cutters, hydraulic presses, and bucket trucks.
  • Develops knowledge of all relevant electronic systems such as mapping, outage management, time entry, and work order.
  • Attends regularly scheduled safety meetings, vendor schools, and special training and safety sessions, as assigned.
  • Attends in-house training classes in preparation for job progression.
  • Have and maintain a valid CDL License with Trailer Endorsement.
